Frequently Asked Questions
ACE (Automated Commercial Environment) is CBP’s primary trade processing system. It’s used to transmit and receive import data electronically (via a broker/ABI) and to access certain account and reporting tools through the ACE Portal.
If you need to log in to the ACE Portal, use the official site: ACE Secure Data Portal.
Clearance time depends on the shipment, documents, and whether CBP or a Partner Government Agency (FDA/USDA/APHIS) selects it for review or exam.
- Typical: many shipments clear within same day to 1–2 business days when documents are complete.
- Delays: holds/exams can extend timelines by several days depending on port workload and exam type.
Best way to avoid delays: upload complete documents early at /client-upload-portal.
FDA holds can happen for several reasons, including:
- Missing or incorrect information needed for filing
- Prior Notice issues (mismatches or incomplete details)
- Manufacturer/shipper/consignee information that doesn’t match documents
- Labeling/compliance questions
- Random or risk-based sampling/exams

Most shipments require:
- Commercial Invoice
- Packing List
- Bill of Lading / Air Waybill
- Arrival notice (when available)
- Power of Attorney (often required for new clients)
Some commodities/origins may require additional documents (FDA/USDA/APHIS, treatment, phytosanitary, organic, etc.). See: Required Documents by Commodity (update this link to your actual page).
Import duties are typically based on the shipment’s classification (HTS code), value, and country of origin. Depending on the product, additional fees or tariffs may apply.
We help verify the needed details to calculate duties correctly and avoid rejections or delays.
A customs exam is when CBP (and sometimes other agencies) selects a shipment for additional inspection. Exams can include document review, x-ray imaging, or physical inspection.
Exams can add time and cost (handling/transport/storage). The best prevention is accurate documents and consistent product details.
